Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry, Eliezer Joldan Memorial College, Leh was established in 2004 by the Higher Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir. The strength of students was 18 in number with the introduction of science stream in College and the number increased successively till the present time. The Department of Chemistry is associated with the teaching of organic, inorganic, physical chemistry and Spectroscopy to the undergraduate students of science stream. In the UG course, some specific courses like Polymer Chemistry, Material Chemistry, Biological Chemistry and Skill Enhancement Course like Basic Analytical Chemistry is also included. The department envisions producing knowledgeable graduates thereby, contributing to a chemically literate society through teaching via smart classes, general classes and laboratories. The Department of Chemistry has a well-equipped laboratory with required chemicals for conducting the regular practical classes. Students are able to learn the concepts of Chemistry such as chromatography, phase equilibrium, chemical kinetics etc. easily by doing practicals in the lab. For that lab is equipped with instruments like Conductometers, Abbe’s Refractometer, pH meter, Polarimeter, Calorimeter, Magnetic Stirrer, Centrifuge, Digital Balances, Molecular Model kit, etc. Equipments like conical flask, volumetric flask, separating funnel, condensers, beakers, thermometers, measuring cylinders, beakers, etc., are available to perform the practical. Laboratory is functional with 18 practical classes per week. Scientists, Professors from various institutes/ Universities are invited to motivate the students and also make them to know about the research work done in various fields of Chemistry.
